A return to homelands A return to homelands is one of the first Driver Programs initiated on Mornington Island. It is a scheme to promote a return to outstations and homelands on the Island. The program's Driver is Susan Sewter. ![]() ![]() "We've always believed that one of our solutions is returning to the traditional family lands. We're trying to get people back out to their homelands." Susan Sewter This is where he walked Susan Sewter dreams of a return to homelands, not only for her family, but for all of the people of Mornington Island. The importance of country and a sense of ancestral belonging and history enriches the lives of many people living in remote Indigenous communities. The desire to walk on the land traversed by centuries of forbearers is central to a sense of well-being and place. "The importance of our country to us is very hard to describe. I go back out there whenever I can - my mind becomes clear and all I am thinking about is my Great Grandfather and that this is where he walked." Susan Sewter ![]() "If we have outstations maybe the people would start coming out to their country. People used to sit around the campfire telling stories, but those things don't happen anymore. Maybe if we all get together and help each other we'll be right. They are the things I'd like to see come back to Mornington. Kids will go to learn to hunt and fish and feed themselves. They don't get to do those things in town." Hazel Sewter Taking the load off your shoulders Susan believes that establishing outstations and encouraging a return to homelands will help restore a sense of community and support on Mornington Island. The social or emotional isolation that is experienced by many people in all communities across Australia can be even more extreme in isolated or remote locations. "A lot of people in our community walk around with loads on their shoulders and just don't know how to get rid of it. Our people are very good at hiding all of the pressure until it builds up to the final break-down. It can be really hard to know how people are feeling sometimes. We need that space of the homelands." Susan Sewter Where to next? The next stage in the Driver Program will involve Susan and other Drivers participating in further capacity building in April 2008. Drivers will receive one-on-one training with a top business consultant to develop a comprehensive business plan, as well as Media and Marketing Training from the BUSH TV team to take their ideas to the negotiating table. |
